New gas supplies amounting to eight million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) were added to the national grid from the Sylhet gas field on a trial basis on Monday, significantly boosting the country’s fuel supplies.
The new gas was found in the abandoned well no 7 in Haripur, Jaintapur upazila, Sylhet. The well has been made operational through repair and maintenance, three decades after it was labeled dysfunctional. Afterwards, gas was extracted from the well on a trial basis for a week.
The Sylhet Gas Field Ltd decided to explore the old well in July for finding new supplies there. The exploration works brought bright outcomes with gas discovery of 7 million cubic feet per day and 8.5 million cubic feet per day in two layers of the well. The two discoveries were made on 14 and 22 October.
The gas can be extracted consistently for the next 15-20 years, the company said.
