200-year-old traditional Fish Fair draws huge gathering in M' bazar

A vendor from Sunamganj brought 2 maunds of bagai fish to the fair. He caught the fish from Surma River. The price of the fish in the fair is 2 lakh 50 thousand taka. Finally he said that he will sell the fish if it is Rs 2 lakh.
Wholesale fish is being sold in 30 fish stalls at the fair and thousands of retail shops are selling fish. All in all.

The organizers of the fair have expressed hope that fish worth 20 cores will be sold in this fair.

A 200-year-old traditional fish fair is gathering in Sherpur of Moulvibazar district. Although the last two years were not due to corona, this time the fish fair is starting in a festive atmosphere. The people of this region are very excited about the fair when the fish fair will start around the year. The fair started on Friday, January 13. It will end on January 15 Sunday morning.

According to local sources, two hundred years ago, a zamindar named Mathura Babu of Manomukh area of Sadar Upazila started a fish fair at the confluence of Manu and Kushiara rivers and it continued for 150 years. In 1972, since social conflicts arose over this fair in Manomukh of the upazila, the Kushiara fair is being held on the banks of the Kushiara river in the Brahmin village near Sherpur, 26 km south of the district headquarters. The fair was small then but it was day by day .

Growing has now become huge. Which is known as the largest fish fair in the country. The fair started on the occasion of Paush Sankranti of Sanatan Dharmabalambi but now it is becoming a universal festival.

At the fair, fishmongers make scaffolds out of bamboo to attract the attention of the gourmets and foodies in various poses including huge pakarui, katla, bagai, kalbaus, mrigel.

Arranged the species of fish. Many foodies are happily buying fresh fish in it. Many people are taking selfies of big fish with their mobile phones to keep their memories.

Since the start of fish sales on Friday evening, the sales have increased from time to time. The fish fair is busy with the walk of thousands of buyers and sellers. The fishes are generally Padma, Meghna, Yamuna, Surma,  Hakaluki of Moulvibazar along with Kushiara river, Hail, Kwadighi haor, Tanguar haor of Sunamganj and small big haor of the country.

Among them, Haor of Tangua, Haakaluki Haor have gained more importance in the fish fair. Fishermen bring fresh fish of various species that grow naturally in Howar. One at the fair.

From 1 kg fish to 200 kg weight fish are available. The market value of which is lakhs of rupees. In addition, currently extinct species of fish are seen in this fair.

Meanwhile, fishmongers are preparing big shops for the fair. Various types of household items and various types of furniture, Many shopkeepers are also sitting with cute things, children's toys, dolls, ponies and horses.

On the other hand, the shopkeepers are sitting with wooden beds, cupboards, racks and other furniture. The presence of people of different age groups was observed in the fair.

Moulvibazar Police Superintendent Mohammad Zakaria said, this fair is a tradition of this area. Adequate security measures have been taken to prevent any untoward incident at the fair.
