US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval discussed the situation in Bangladesh during Sullivan’s visit to New Delhi on January 6.
US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti confirmed the discussions while speaking to Indian media.
Sullivan met with Doval and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit.
In a press release, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) did not explicitly mention Bangladesh, but noted that the two NSAs held “extensive discussions on bilateral, regional, and global issues.”
A joint statement emphasized the growing strength of the India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership.
Ambassador Garcetti, who participated in the meeting, said Bangladesh was a significant part of their talks.
“Both the Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration have stressed the importance of protecting minority rights,” he said. “The discussions focused on how to support Bangladesh in holding elections as soon as possible. We all want a stable, prosperous, and tolerant Bangladesh.”
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi last week reiterated India’s commitment to a “democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.”
He added that India aims to strengthen ties with Dhaka through mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity to each other’s concerns.
