Betaghi (Barguna) Correspondent

Sundarban Journalist Forum Committee has been formed in Barguna to protect Sundarbans and coastal Aareas and stop environmental pollution.

Monir Hossain Kamal, RTV's Barguna Correspondent and Lokbetar Director, was elected Convener, Md. Hafizur Rahman, Barguna Correspondent of Bangladesh Khabor, Devdas Majumder, Special Correspondent of Kalerkanth and Hafez Shafiqul Islam Khokon, Patharghata Correspondent of Banglanews were the joint conveners, and Abu Jafar Md. Saleh, Barguna Correspondent of Samakal, was Member Secretary.

The committee was formed at a meeting held at the Barguna Press Club under the management of the Sundarban Transformation Project. Shahadat Hossain Bachchu, Director of Transformation and Subhasish Bhattacharya, Coordinator of Sundarban Project were present at the meeting. Senior journalist Chittaranjan Shil presided over the meeting. The welcome address was given by Anup Roy, Manager of the Sundarbans Project. The event was managed by Md. Khalilur Rahman, Coordinator of Transformation Barguna.

At that time, the media workers said in their speeches that the Sundarbans is not just a forest, it is directly related to the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in the coastal region. But the Sundarbans are under threat due to coal-based power plants, industrialization, illegal encroachment and pollution. There is no alternative to protecting the Sundarbans if the country is to be protected from the adverse effects of climate change.

The speakers called for more effective steps to be taken to protect the environment by drawing the attention of policymakers to prevent plastic pollution, modern waste management, taking active initiatives to protect the Sundarbans' environment and increasing efficiency.
