Students and the public held a torchlight procession and protest rally in Kalapara, Patuakhali, to protest the beating to death of scrap dealer Lal Chand alias Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in Dhaka and the deteriorating law and order situation across the country.
The torch procession began at 8 pm on Saturday from the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar. Students, youth and people from various classes and professions participated in it.
The torch procession, after parading the main roads of the city, held a protest meeting in front of the Kalapara Press Club. Nazmus Shakib, president of Amara Kalapara Basi, former president Nazrul Islam, and cultural activist Tanzil Zaman Joy spoke at the event.
Speakers at the rally said, "Standing over the corpse of an ordinary businessman after publicly beating him to death is an example of barbarity and cruelty. The administration's inaction and tendency to protect criminals through political influence has made us worried. The current government has failed to stop these extortionists. If we cannot suppress them with a strong hand, we will be forced to take strict action."
