A five-member special team, formed with representatives from multiple ministries, visited Munshiganj Sadar’s 250-bed General Hospital premises to assess the feasibility of constructing a medical college.

On Wednesday morning, Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Fatema Tul Zannat, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Sharif Ullah, along with the visiting team members from Dhaka, inspected the Munshiganj General Hospital area. The district administration confirmed the matter.

Earlier, on April 7 this year, following a meeting on “Infrastructure Development in Munshiganj”, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Agriculture, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, had said: "We have reached a preliminary decision; we are trying our best so that a medical college can be established here very soon. Within one or two months, we hope to inaugurate it."

Although more than three months have passed since that assurance, the plan has yet to be implemented. However, the positive news is that the construction of a medical college in Munshiganj Sadar has made some progress.

Acting Civil Surgeon Dr. ATM Obaidullah stated on August 12 that the district health department had already sent a proposal to the Ministry of Public Works for the construction of the medical college building. He mentioned that a team from the ministry was expected to visit Munshiganj, after which further steps would likely be taken.

When asked how many more months it might take, he could not provide a specific answer.

It is learnt that the plan includes constructing the medical college within the Munshiganj General Hospital premises, along with an additional multi-storied building at the old Kachari area.
