Major (Retired) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) has been acquitted from the pending case under Cyber Act.
Barisal Cyber Tribunal judge Ghulam Farooq acquitted him from the case on Monday afternoon.
The information was confirmed by the bench assistant of the concerned court, Nazmul Hasan.
The date of framing of charges against Major Hafeez in the case was fixed on Monday. After being acquitted in the case, he spoke to the journalists present in the court premises about the need for quick elections.
He said, without an elected government, the government of wise and virtuous people is a weak government. I hope that the interim government's electoral reforms will speed up and hold elections at a reasonable time.
Bhola Badarpur Union Awami League President Faridul Haque filed as a plaintiff during the 11th National Assembly elections in 2018. BNP leader Babul Biswas of Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola has been accused in this case besides Major Hafiz. Babul was also acquitted by the court.
Bench assistant Nazmul Hasan said that two accused were acquitted on the day of framing the charge of the case as a valiant freedom fighter due to non-submission of necessary documents including forensic report. On December 28, 2018, Faridul Haque, Chairman of Badarpur UP of Lalmohan Upazila and President of Badarpur (South) Union Awami League, filed the Digital Security Act case against 7 people including Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed at Lalmohan police station in Bhola.
Regarding the case, the bench assistant said that Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram was the candidate of BNP-led Oikya Front for Bhola-3 seat in the 11th National Assembly Elections. On December 24, 2018, a record of the words spoken on the mobile phone while staying at the residence of Ward No. 5 of Lalmohan Municipality was leaked. In this case, the case was filed against 7 named people and 5 anonymous people on the charge of deliberately showing fear in the web site and digital format in order to thwart the National Parliament election. Inspector (Investigation) of Lalmohan Police Station Bashir Alam filed the charge sheet on August 31, 2019 accusing the two persons.
It should be noted that Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was elected member of National Parliament six times from Bhola-3 seat. He became an independent member of parliament in 1991 and later joined the BNP. Last August, BNP's policy-making council made Major Hafiz a member of the National Standing Committee.
