EC declares 1,985 nomination papers valid, 731 invalid

Staff Correspondent

The Election Commission (EC) has declared 1,985 nomination papers valid out of 2,716 submitted by aspirants for the 12th parliamentary election.

After scrutinising the nomination papers, the EC rejected the remaining 731 nomination papers, Ashok Kumar Debnath, additional secretary at the EC, revealed this information on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Secretary of the EC Secretariat Mahbuber Rahman Sarker said the majority of 731 nomination papers were rejected on three grounds: a mismatch in 1PC voters’ signatures submitted by independent aspirants, loan and utility bill defaults, and dual citizenship.

In the 2018 polls, 3,065 candidates filed nomination forms with the EC. Of them, 1,865 candidates eventually participated in the election.

In the parliamentary election held in 2014, a total of 1,107 candidates submitted nomination papers. However, nominations for 230 candidates were revoked, 334 candidates withdrew, and 543 candidates ultimately took part in the polls.
