Cumilla city's rooftops, balconies growing green

Zakir Azad Cumilla

Cumilla was famous for banks and ponds. It was also known as the green city. That green tree has reduced a lot. In the last decade, multi-storied buildings are increasing in the city by leaps and bounds. Trees fell with him. But recently, the movement of greenery is increasing on the roofs and balconies of Comilla city.

Fruits, flowers and vegetables are planted on the roof and balcony. Various roofs of the surface city have been seen, the roof of the building is like a piece of green garden. The sound of chirping of birds is also heard there. One such roof garden can be seen in Ashoktala of Cumilla city. A 9-story building named Samarnika. Rows of high-rise buildings can be seen around the roof of that building. Green is crawling on that roof. More than 20 types of fruit trees, 10 types of vegetables and 5 types of spices can be seen in the garden.

There are pigeon and chicken farms. Seeing the movement of people, the birds outside fly away. Notable fruits include orange, malta, mango, jackfruit, guava, pomegranate, currant, banana, karamcha, cool, litchi, mango, blackberry, papaya, safeda and olive. Potatoes, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage have been cultivated among the vegetables. Mint, kale, brinjal, beans, bitter gourd, gourd, rice pumpkin and sajina. There are henna trees and sugarcane.

Spices include pepper, ginger, turmeric, red pepper, coriander. Bagani Mohammad Anisur Rahman Akhand said, we had a big house in this place. There were 21 coconut trees, 17 mango trees, jackfruit, guava, banana and other wood trees in the house. The building had to be built due to the need of the time. But I miss that green environment very much. So I do a roof garden. I sit inside the garden in the evening with morning and afternoon service. The green trees and the blue sky make for a great time.

If there is a full moon in the sky, the surroundings become heavenly. Dilip Rasha, a teacher at Cumilla Agriculture and Technical College, said that rooftop gardens are expensive. Commercial profit cannot be calculated. However, fresh fruits, vegetables and spices are available from the roof garden. Great time spent in gardening. Besides, the garden is also playing a role in protecting the natural balance. Ayub Mahmud, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department, Cumilla , said that the cultivation of fruits, flowers and vegetables is increasing on balconies and roofs of Cumilla city. This is promising news. We are helping gardeners with advice.
