Case filed against former MP Babu, two chairmen, 11 police in Koyra

A case was filed in the court on Tuesday against former MP Akhtaruzzaman Babu, two chairmen of the union council and three police officers in Koira, Khulna. Case No. CR 27/25.

The Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, Koyra, filed a case against 108 people on charges of harassment, intimidation, extortion and looting in a false case. Md. Nurul Islam is a teacher and activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He is a resident of Sarishamut village in Koyra upazila.

The other accused in the case are Baharul Islam, chairman of the Koyra Sadar Union of the upazila and organizing secretary of the Koyra Upazila Awami League, Abdus Samad Gazi, chairman of the Bagali Union Council and president of the union Awami League, Abdus Sattar Par, former chairman of the same union and vice-president of the upazila Awami League, Deputy Police Inspector Md. Salauddin, ASIs Ashrafuzzaman and Nasir Uddin, eight police members, several leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, lawyers and public representatives.

According to the case, the accused used to demand extortion from the plaintiff at different times and threaten him. The police officers involved in the case were involved in various cases, including sabotage cases, and were taking bribes by threatening to crossfire.

At one stage, while the accused were on their way to the Khulna District Court for a case, 100/120 unidentified terrorists, including the accused, armed with teapots, machetes, sticks, axes, iron rods and domestic weapons, blocked the members of the Bangladesh Awami League's affiliates, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Krishak League and Muldal, along with them, on both sides of the Masjidkur Bridge and looted their food items, cash, watches, gold rings and chains.

The estimated value of which was 10 lakh taka. They also threatened to pay a ransom of 15 lakh taka. At that time, 2 explosives exploded on both sides of the bridge, creating panic and scattering us. Later, when the accused did not pay the extortion money, they entered the plaintiff's house, held the plaintiff's wife and family hostage at gunpoint, threatened to kill them, and broke open the trunk of the plaintiff's house and looted the cash.

The plaintiff in the case, Md. Nurul Islam, said that under the previous autocratic Awami League government, we were harassed in various ways. The police harassed us by filing false cases against Awami League leaders and activists. At various times, they looted houses and demanded extortion money by threatening them. I have approached the court in the hope of getting justice for the culprits. I hope to get justice.

The plaintiff's lawyer, Adv. Abu Bakor Siddique, said that the court has taken up the case and asked the CID to submit an investigation report. I hope we will get a fair trial.
