Adviser Nahid to resign this week

Staff Correspondent

Adviser Nahid Islam is set to resign from his government position this week to lead the upcoming student-led party as its convener, Nagorik Committee Spokesperson Samanta Sharmin told a private TV channel on Sunday.

The name of the party, set to include members from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movemetn and Jatiya Nagorik Committee, would be finalised this week, sources involved in the planning have said.

The full-fledged party could be launched on or before 24 January. A student organisation is also expected to be launched around the same time. Both the part and the organisation would initially have a convening committee.

The member secretary could be Jatiya Nagorik Committee Convener Nasiruddin Patwary or the Committee’s Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain. The new party’s top forum would include Jatiya Nagorik Committee Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam and Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Convener Hasnat Abdullah.

Nahid Islam, Sarjis Alam, and Hasnat Abdullah were key leaders in last year’s anti-fascist movement that resulted in the ouster of Sheikh Hasina dictatorship.

Sarjis has said the upcoming party would be governed democratically, and no single person would get preference. Those who nurture the spirit of last year’s July-August uprising would hold leadership roles within the party.
