2 policemen arrested over Abu Sayed murder

The Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) on Monday arrested two policemen over the killing of Abu Sayed during the students’ job quota reform protests.
The killing of the Begum Rokeya University student by police at point-blank range on 16 July supercharged the student movement into eventually becoming a student-people revolution for ending Awami League’s 16-year autocratic rule.
ASI Md Amir Ali, and Constable Sujan Chandra Rai were handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for taking the next legal steps against them, confirmed PBI Superintendent Md Zakir Hossain.
On 3 August, sensing growing danger to its hold on power, the Awami League government had ordered for the suspension of the arrested two policemen.
Ramjan Ali, the elder brother of Abu Sayed, filed a murder case on 18 August with Rangpur city’s Tajhat Police Station against the arrested policemen and 15 others.
In total, about 17 policemen including former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun were alleged in the case, alongside 30-35 other unidentified individuals.
