
GAU VC at orientation : "Love soil like you love your mother

Soil is often compared to a mother therefore, it must be loved and cared for with the same reverence, said Professor Dr. GKM Mustafizur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) said this while addressing the orientation program for newly admitted MS and PhD students of the Department of Soil Science.
The event, held at the department's seminar room on Monday at 12 PM, welcomed 16 MS and 4 PhD students for the 2025 academic session.
In his keynote speech, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted the indispensable role of soil in human survival. Our basic needs food, clothing, shelter all begin with the soil. Life on earth is unimaginable without it, he remarked. Drawing references from the Holy Quran, he reflected on the divine significance, utility and inherent dignity of soil in human life.
The orientation was organized by the Department of Soil Science and presided over by the Head of the Department, Dr. Md. Dhin Islam. Prof Dr. Md. Safiul Islam Afrad, Treasurer of the University, attended as the special guest.
Other distinguished attendees included Registrar Md. Abdullah Mridha, Proctor Prof Dr. Mohammad Saiful Alam and both senior and junior faculty members and staff of the department. The program commenced with self-introductions from the incoming students, followed by a heartfelt welcome address from the department head. The Vice-Chancellor then formally greeted the students with flowers and warm wishes marking the beginning of their academic journey at GAU. Several new students shared their thoughts, expressing hope, enthusiasm, and a deep sense of purpose as they step into higher academic life. Additional remarks were delivered by invited guests including Director (ICCE) Prof. Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, Chief Librarian Prof. Dr. Md. Yunus Miah and Director( Transport) Professor Dr. Mohammad Zia Uddin Kamal. Their speeches emphasized the value of soil science, research opportunities and the transformative journey of graduate education. In his address, the Treasurer underscored the critical role of soil science in agriculture and national food security "Soil science is the heartbeat of agriculture.
You are the future leaders who will ensure sustainable farming and food security. The university is here to support you every step of the way." The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from the Chair, followed by a group photo session with the Vice-Chancellor, guests, and students capturing the moment that marks a promising beginning for the universitys newest scholars.
