Fertilizer crisis in Lalmonirhat: Farmers suffer, syndicate making profits

Sabbir Hossain, Hatibandha (Lalmonirhat)

Farmers are facing a serious fertilizer crisis during the current Aman season in Lalmonirhat . Dealers and retailers are selling fertilizers at much higher prices than the government rate. This is increasing the cost of cultivation and causing great suffering for farmers.

The government-fixed price of fertilizers is much lower than the market rate. TSP is set at Tk 1,350 but sold at Tk 1,600–2,500, DAP at Tk 1,050 but sold at Tk 1,350–2,000, Urea at Tk 1,350 but sold at Tk 1,350–1,500, and MOP at Tk 1,000 but sold at Tk 1,100–1,250.

Farmers in Lalmonirhat grow rice and jute, but they are struggling because fertilizer prices keep going up. One farmer said if this continues, it will be hard to survive. Another explained he had to pay much more for fertilizer than the official price.

Farmers can't get fertilizer (TSP) at a fair price. They believe dishonest dealers are hoarding it to sell later for a high profit. Shop owners say they are forced to buy it at these high prices.

The agriculture department says there is enough supply and no shortage. An official said they will take action if anyone complains about the dealers.

Experts say this is a problem because it might mean less rice is grown. This could hurt the country's food supply and economy. Fertilizer is hard to find in many areas.

Farmers want the government to watch the situation closely. They want officials to make sure fertilizer is sold at a fair price so they can farm without worry.
